HISTORY OF ASIA PACIFIC CARDIOLOGYUPDATE@USM> (APCU@USM>)
This year is the 13th year of the conference as part of the positive feedback from the participation of delegates, annually.
This conference has been organized for the first time in the year 2007, and it was organized by the Cardiology Unit, and jointly organized by the Emergency Department at School of Medical Sciences’ lecture hall, USM Health Campus.
After getting favorable feedback from its very first conference, HUSM Cardiology Unit made the next big step of jointly organizing this conference with CardiologyUpdate@USM for the second time in 2008. Due to this astonishing feedback, under the patronage of the honourable Professor Dato’ Dr Zurkurnai bin Yusof, CardiologyUpdate@USM has started to cooperate with National Heart Association of Malaysia (NHAM) in promoting this conference as well as the patron for this conference. This conference has been successfully organized annually with the support of the then director of Health Campus, the honourable professor Dato’ Dr Mafauzy bin Mohamed.
In the year 2012, this conference has been getting the public attention especially cardiologists in Malaysia as well as in Asia with the involvement of participants and panel of speakers from Asia.
With this positive development, CardiologyUpdate @USM has been upgraded to Asia Pacific CardiologyUpdate@USM> (APCU@USM). This positive change has also been made known to USM Penang as the then Vice Chancellor, the honourable Dato’ Omar Osman was invited to officially launch this conference. However, due to some reasons, it was officiated by Health Campus officials.
In the year 2014, the Asia Pacific CardiologyUpdate@USM was launched by the honourable Professor Dato’ Dr Asma Ismail, Director of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education Malaysia, on behalf of the then second Minister of Education, the honourable Dato Seri Idris bin Jusoh.
Due to its massive involvement from Ministry of Health doctors (MOH), APCU@USM committee members had agreed to invite the Minister of Health, the honourable Dato Seri Dr S. Subramaniam to launch the conference in 2015, but it was represented by the honourable Dato Dr Azman Abu Bakar, Director of Medical Development, Ministry of Health, accompanied by Director of Health, Kelantan, the honourable Dato Dr Ahmad Razin bin Dato Ahmad Mahir. In his inaugural speech, he had announced his full support for this conference and assured that this conference will always be supported by the Ministry of Health.
In 2016, the program’s committee had agreed not to organize this conference due to some unavoidable reasons.
In 2017, the 10th conference had been organized. It was officiated by Director of Medical Development, Ministry of Health, Dato’ Dr haji Azman Abu Bakar. Also present was the national cardiology service advisor of ministry of health, Dato’ Dr omar Ismail, President of National Cardiology Institute, Dr Ng Wai Kiat, Director of Health Kelantan, Dato haji Ahmad Razin Ahmad mahir, senior deputy director (clinical) on behalf of director of health campus, Dr Nik Min Ahmad, joint director of the conference, Dr Mohd Sapawi Mohamed as well as
The President of USM Internal Medicine Association, Dr Wan Mohd Izani Wan Mohamed. In conjunction with World Heart Day 2017, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) would like to invite the society to further appreciate their heart and cardiovascular health. According to the Organizing Committee’s chairperson who was also Head of Medical Department, School of Medical Sciences Universiti Sains Malaysia, professor Dato’ Dr Zurkurnai Yusof, this conference is held in line with MOH goals and also with the intention to expose participants, especially young medical doctors regarding the increased risks and cardiovascular patients or also known as heart disease. Apart from that, it has become and an interest and a responsibility of all medical practitioners in order to create awareness on the importance of cardiovascular diseases not only in regards to preventive aspects in line with the chosen theme which is, ‘Bench to Bedside, Translational Medicine’, referring to laboratory researches done which can be translated into caring and treatment of patients especially in the ward.
In the year 2018, APCU has been widely known to many and a lot debates and discussions reflecting current and future challenges in cardiology which were made in regards to the advancement of cardiovascular care and treatent technology. A large part of the discussion revolves around how it would impact caring for patients, treatment, the burden of cost, and its results which correspond with the theme that yeaar which was , Dr Wan Mohd Izani Wan Mohamed. The conference which lasted for three days was also joined by cardiologists from Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Heart Institute (IJN) Malaysia which presented various related topics. The conference with the theme ‘Increasing Care through Applied Cardiology’ was an annual program which became the platform for cardiologist and medical practitioners from around the globe who shared knowledge and latest breakthroughs in cardiology. Deputy Director General of Health (Medicine), Datuk Dr. Azman Abu Bakar has officiated the 11th Asia Pacific Cardiology Update Conference @ Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) 2018 representing the Minister of Health, Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad with Universiti Sains Malaysia HUSM Senior Cardiology Consultant, Professor Datuk Dr. Zurkurnai Yusof.
The 12th APCU conference was held in 2019. It was expected that the Malaysian Minister of Health, YB Datuk Seri Dr. Haji Dzulkefly Bin Ahmad and the Minister of Education, YB Dr. Maszlee Malik was able to inaugurate the 12th Asia Pacific Cardiology Update Conference @ Universiti Sains Malaysia accompanied by Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail as vice chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Apart from that, APCU always obtains full support from the Health Campus Director, YBhg Professor Dato' Paduka Dr. Ahmad Sukari Bin Halim wh is also the director of Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital.
